According to the Greek legislation, there are currently 3 ways to use renewable energy in a building:
- Under a "feed-in-tariff" scheme, whereby all the produced power, e.g. from a PV-system, is fed into the grid
- By installing an autonomous off-grid system with storage batteries (e.g. using PVs, wind-turbine, hybrid etc.), in order to be independent from the grid and consume as much energy as is produced by the renewable energy system(s)
- By installing a renewable energy system, consuming as much power is produced, whilst being also connected to the grid
This last case, in order to be attractive to the consumer, needs to operate under a "net-metering" scheme. Net-metering has been succesfully introduced in many European countries.
In Greece, since April 2013, building owners (domestic or non-domestic) can install renewable energy systems for their own use. This effectively means that the user will consume in real-time the energy being produced from the renewable energy source(s) installed (e.g. PVs, biomass, wind etc.), and at times when this is not sufficient to cover the building's energy needs, the additional energy is provided from the grid, without the need to resort to stored energy using batteries. Similarly, when the renewable energy systems' produce excess energy, this is fed back into the grid, so as to maintain the stability of the system.
The operation of a "net-metering" scheme, which is expected to be launced in October 2014 by the Ministry of Environment, Energy and Climate Change, will define the operational framework and technical details of the program, such us installed power limitations, tariffs for the excess energy fed into the grid etc.
Using net-metering, renewable energy systems are expected to turn into a more attractive investment for households and non-domestic buildings, in order to reduce their energy bills.
The c2h team has extensive experience in this field as we have installed a significant number of Photovoltaic projects throughout Greece (in excess of 10 MW installed power).
