What is BREEAM
BREEAM (Building Research Establishment Environmental Assessment Method) was created by the BRE (UK) and is one of the most widely recognised methods internationally, for the sustainability assessment and certification of buildings.
Over 3,000,000 buildings across 106 countries have been registered for certification and over 1,000,000 have already been certified, since 1990 when the scheme was first launched.
BREEAM evaluates the environmental performance of a building, based on its design, construction and operation, assessing, using a holistic approach, 10 thematic areas:
Within each thematic, there are a number of criteria, either pre-requisites or selection criteria which may be targeted, leading to the achievement of the overall score.
According to the overall score achieved, the building is classified into one of the 5 classification ratings:
Outstanding, Excellent, Very Good, Good, Pass
