Energy Auditing Services
In the context of implementing Law 4342/2015, which aligns Greek legislation with Directive 2012/27/EU of the European Parliament on energy efficiency, rules and procedures are established to ensure that Greece contributes to achieving the European Union’s energy targets by 2030.
Obligated Enterprises
The obligation to carry out an energy audit applies to enterprises that are not considered Small and Medium-sized Enterprises (SMEs), i.e. those that:
- employ more than 250 employees, or
- have an annual turnover exceeding EUR 50 million and an annual balance sheet total exceeding EUR 43 million.
Energy audits are conducted on a regular basis, at least every four years, by certified energy auditors registered in the Energy Auditors Registry of the Ministry of Environment and Energy (YPEN).
Scope and Purpose of Energy Audits
Energy audits aim to:
- assess the current energy status of the enterprise,
- analyze energy flows and consumption per process, facility, or building,
- identify significant energy uses and the factors affecting them,
- formulate proposals and measures to improve energy efficiency and reduce operating costs.
Energy audits must be independent, well-documented, and cost-effective, in accordance with the methodology set out in the “Guide for Energy Audits in Buildings, Industry and Transport” issued by YPEN and relevant European standards (e.g. EN 16247).
Categories of Energy Audits
Depending on the scope and complexity of the facilities, energy audits are classified into three main categories:
- Category A: Residential buildings, office buildings up to 2,000 m², retail stores up to 2,000 m², and professional workshops with installed mechanical power not exceeding 22 kW or thermal power not exceeding 50 kW.
- Category B: Office buildings over 2,000 m², commercial buildings over 2,000 m², other buildings housing tertiary sector uses (such as schools, hotels, hospitals, etc.), and industrial and manufacturing facilities with total installed power not exceeding 1,000 kW.
- Category C: Industrial and manufacturing facilities with total installed power exceeding 1,000 kW.
